“Honestly, I’m kind of relieved”

Relieved

Walk me through it

Feeling relieved is okay. Maybe your home was loud or tense.

Feeling better doesn’t mean you don’t love both your parents.

If your home had a lot of shouting, silence, or tension, the split can feel like a window finally opening. That’s not mean or disloyal. It’s your nervous system finally getting a break.

Some kids feel guilty about feeling relieved, especially if a parent is really sad. You’re allowed to have your own reaction. You don’t have to match anyone.

Things that might help

  • Notice what feels lighter now, and let yourself enjoy it.
  • If you feel guilty about the relief, write down both feelings side by side. Both are allowed.
  • Tell someone you trust how it really feels, without having to make it sound sad.

If you want to say it out loud

Not sure how to start? You could try:

“I know this is hard for you, but for me it actually feels a bit calmer, and I hope that’s okay.”

You could say it to a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, a counselor, or someone on a free help line.

Things to tell yourself

  • It’s okay to feel relieved. Peace is something I’m allowed to want.
  • Some things are still good. I can notice them.
