“Nobody gets it”

Lonely

Walk me through it

It can feel like nobody understands. But lots of kids really do.

Talking to someone, even a stranger on a helpline, can make it feel less lonely.

Your parents are dealing with their own stuff, your friends might not know what to say, and suddenly you can feel invisible in your own family. That kind of lonely is real.

Free youth helplines exist for exactly this. You can text or chat with a trained person who gets it, and you don’t need to be in a crisis to reach out.

Some schools and community centers also run free groups for kids whose parents are divorcing. Being in a room with people who get it can change everything.

Things that might help

  • Text or chat with a youth line. The Get help page lists free ones where you live.
  • Ask your school counselor if there’s a group for kids with separated parents.
  • Plan one small thing a week with a friend, even if it’s just walking somewhere together.

If you want to say it out loud

Not sure how to start? You could try:

“I’ve been feeling kind of alone with all this. Can we hang out more?”

You could say it to a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, a counselor, or someone on a free help line.

Things to tell yourself

  • I deserve help, and asking for it is brave.
  • Lots of kids have been here. I am not the only one.
  • I have people who show up for me, and I can lean on them.
