Sometimes when something big happens, you don’t feel much at all. That’s normal too.
Your feelings aren’t broken. They might just be taking a break.
Feeling nothing, or feeling like you’re watching your life from outside, is a common way brains protect themselves when there’s too much to process at once.
Usually the feelings come back slowly, sometimes at weird times. That’s okay. You don’t have to force them.
If the numb feeling lasts a long time, or you start feeling hopeless or like you want to hurt yourself, please reach out right away. The Get help page has free lines you can call or text any time.
Things that might help
- Do something with your senses: a hot shower, a cold drink, music turned up.
- Draw how today feels using only colors and shapes. No words needed.
- Check in with your body: where do you feel tight, heavy, or nothing at all?
If you want to say it out loud
Not sure how to start? You could try:
“I know I seem fine, but I kind of just feel blank about all of it.”
You could say it to a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, a counselor, or someone on a free help line.
Things to tell yourself
- All of my feelings are allowed, even the messy ones.
- If I don’t feel much right now, that’s okay. My feelings will come back in their own time.
- Small steps still count. Getting through today is enough.
